President-elect Donald Trump has named Sebastian Gorka, a conservative commentator who served in his first administration, to a national security role as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism. Gorka, known for defending Trump’s ban on refugees from predominantly Muslim countries, has been described as a strong advocate of the “America First Agenda.” However, his previous role in the administration was cut short following changes in White House personnel. Since then, Gorka has hosted radio and TV shows and was criticized by former Trump administration member John Bolton as a “con man.” Despite this criticism, Trump has selected Gorka for the position. Alex Wong was also named as assistant to the president and principal deputy national security adviser, working under Trump’s newly named national security adviser, Mike Waltz. Wong has previously held positions related to North Korea and East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State. Concerns have been raised regarding Gorka’s qualifications and loyalty, with skeptics questioning his education credentials and suggesting that his position is owed solely to loyalty to Trump rather than expertise in counterterrorism.
