Martin Makary has been selected as the FDA commissioner

President-elect Donald Trump has selected Dr. Martin Makary, a Johns Hopkins surgeon, as the new Food and Drug Administration commissioner, citing his desire to restore trust in the agency and address the Childhood Chronic Disease Epidemic. Trump announced that Makary will work alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his nominee for health secretary, to evaluate harmful chemicals in the food supply and drugs. The FDA is responsible for ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs, medical devices, and the nation’s food supply. Makary, originally from Liverpool, England, is a graduate of Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Harvard University. He is known for his advocacy for physician-led initiatives such as The Surgical Checklist, which he developed at Johns Hopkins. Makary has received awards for his work in evidence-based medicine and public policy research and currently leads a research group at Johns Hopkins. Trump’s decision to appoint Makary signals the administration’s commitment to addressing public health issues and restoring confidence in the FDA.
