President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Grenell, who previously served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to end the conflict. While there is currently no special envoy for this specific conflict, Trump is contemplating creating the position. However, there is no guarantee that Grenell would accept the role if offered. Some of Grenell’s past statements, such as advocating for “autonomous zones” to settle the conflict and expressing hesitation about Ukraine joining NATO, may give Ukraine’s leaders pause. Despite these concerns, Grenell’s supporters highlight his extensive diplomatic experience and knowledge of European affairs. Trump’s transition team has not confirmed Grenell’s potential appointment, and Grenell himself has not commented on the matter. Grenell, who campaigned for Trump during the election, was previously considered for the position of Secretary of State, but was ultimately passed over for Senator Marco Rubio. Trump has promised to swiftly end the conflict in Ukraine, but has not provided details on his plans to do so.
