Recent allegations of a bribery conspiracy involving four current and former Massachusetts State Police troopers have once again brought intense scrutiny to the department. This scandal is just the latest in a series of incidents that have plagued the state police, with past scandals playing a role in the massive police reform bill signed into law two years ago.
In 2017, an overtime scandal was uncovered, revealing that state troopers had been collecting extra pay for work they did not perform. As a result, nine troopers were convicted, and the entire troop where they were based was disbanded. That same year, a state police colonel admitted to ordering his staff to alter an arrest report involving a judge’s daughter, leading to an independent investigation and lawsuits.
In 2022, two State Police Academy drill instructors were removed after trainees were forced to crawl on hot pavement, causing abrasions. This incident followed the removal of two troopers from the academy for participating in a dangerous “slip-and-slide” activity. These incidents, along with others, led to reforms in the police reform law, allowing for the appointment of a state police colonel from outside the agency and making it a crime to knowingly submit a false timesheet.
The recent bribery scandal highlights the ongoing challenges within the Massachusetts State Police and underscores the importance of continued oversight and accountability in law enforcement agencies. The department will need to address these issues to rebuild trust and maintain the integrity of its operations.
