UMG has denied the accusations, stating that they employ ethical practices in marketing and promotion. The New York filing also alleges that UMG fired employees loyal to Drake to cover up their alleged schemes. The legal actions represent a significant escalation of the feud between two of the biggest stars in hip-hop, with the label representing both artists at the center of the conflict.
Drake and Lamar, who were once collaborators, have been engaged in a public feud since 2013.
