The United States Department of Justice has denied a public records request filed by 25 Investigates for a letter Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey sent regarding the federal probe of the Karen Read murder case in Canton, Massachusetts. Morrissey requested the probe be transferred out of Massachusetts due to potential conflicts with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston. The letter was requested under the Freedom of Information Act but was denied by the DOJ, citing privacy concerns.
Sources indicate that Morrissey’s letter referenced conflicts with former U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins and a high-level federal prosecutor in Boston. Rollins had criticized Morrissey in the past and recently resigned after accusations of misconduct. Morrissey claims he sent a copy of the letter to Read’s legal team but it is subject to a protective order.
The Norfolk DA’s office initially denied a public records request for the letter, citing ongoing investigations and confidential personnel information. The Massachusetts Secretary of State’s Office has ordered Morrissey’s team to provide a new response. Morrissey has called the federal probe “extraordinary” but remains unconcerned about it.
