Israel attacks outskirts of Beirut ahead of Hezbollah ceasefire vote

Israeli warplanes struck buildings in Beirut and southern Lebanon on Tuesday as Israel’s security Cabinet prepared to vote on a U.S.-brokered ceasefire with Hezbollah. The proposed deal includes a two-month halt in fighting and requires Hezbollah to leave southern Lebanon while Israeli troops return to their side of the border. Israel’s security Cabinet is expected to approve the proposal, with support from Hezbollah.

Israel’s Defense Minister warned that Israeli forces would strike Hezbollah if the ceasefire isn’t enforced. European Union diplomats have expressed optimism over the deal, stating that Israel’s security concerns have been addressed.

Despite hopes for the ceasefire, Israel continued its campaign in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah military positions. Bombardments in Beirut’s suburbs and the southern city of Tyre caused no immediate casualties. The ceasefire aims to calm regional tensions and end the conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions.

As the ceasefire negotiations continue, U.S. officials caution that there could still be delays or challenges. While the deal is anticipated to be approved, some hard-line Israeli officials oppose it, believing it would be a missed opportunity to eradicate Hezbollah.
