Child Labor Laws Violated: Burger King and Popeyes Fined Over $2 Million

Two fast food chains in Massachusetts are facing hefty fines for violating child labor laws and failing to pay their employees. Burger King franchise Northeast Foods LLC has been fined over $2 million after an investigation revealed that they were not paying their employees minimum wage or in a timely manner, and failed to provide sick time as legally required. This is not the first time the company has been cited for violating labor laws. In addition, they were found to have allowed minors to work more hours than legally allowed. The company did not maintain accurate payroll records and failed to provide necessary documentation to the Attorney General’s office.

Similarly, Popeyes franchise operators Amish Parikh and Ashish Parikh were fined over $200,000 for violating child labor laws and earned sick time law. The operators did not allow workers to use sick time and scheduled minors to work during prohibited hours. The fines included restitution for the workers and penalties.

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell emphasized the importance of enforcing workplace laws to protect and empower workers, including young workers. The fines issued to these fast food chains serve as a reminder of the consequences for violating labor laws and mistreating employees. It is crucial for companies to adhere to labor regulations to ensure fair treatment of all workers and to uphold the rights and protections that they are entitled to.
