President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Jamieson Greer as the United States trade representative, a position crucial to Trump’s promise to impose new tariffs on imports. Greer previously worked in the Trump administration as chief of staff for former USTR Robert Lighthizer and played a key role in implementing tariff hikes on goods from China. Trump’s nomination of Greer, subject to Senate confirmation, follows his announcement of executive actions to levy tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada, and China. Economists are concerned about potential cost increases for consumers due to the tariff hikes. China, Mexico, and Canada have criticized Trump’s tariff plans. Greer, a former Air Force lawyer and current partner at King & Spalding, will focus on reducing the country’s trade deficit, protecting American industries, and expanding export markets. In addition to Greer’s nomination, Trump named Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council and Vince Haley as director of the Domestic Policy Council. Hassett previously served as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, contributing to Trump’s 2017 tax cut package, while Haley worked on policy and speechwriting for Trump’s 2024 campaign. Trump highlighted Hassett’s role in helping families recover from inflation and reiterated his commitment to tax cuts and fair trade agreements.
