The Fourth District Appellate Court has reversed the detention order for former Sangamon County Sheriff deputy Sean P. Grayson, who was charged with the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. This means Grayson will be released with conditions soon, pending a hearing to determine the least restrictive conditions for his pretrial release. Possible conditions may include home confinement or monitoring. Grayson’s attorney argued that he was not a flight risk and was dealing with health issues. The shooting of Massey, a Black woman, has led to widespread outrage and an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice into the sheriff’s office. There are still issues to be resolved before Grayson’s release, including the possibility of a petition for leave to appeal to the Illinois State Supreme Court. Despite the ruling, Grayson’s callous behavior during and after the shooting was noted by the presiding judge. Massey was shot in her home after calling 911 about a possible prowler, and the incident was captured on bodycam footage. Grayson is currently being held in the Macon County Jail in Decatur.
