Raj Matharu, a 31-year-old man from Northridge, Los Angeles, has been indicted for attempting to smuggle over 30 pounds of methamphetamine onto an Australia-bound flight from LAX. The drugs, concealed within clothing items, were detected by airport screening officers. Matharu had checked two suitcases filled with meth-impregnated clothes at an LAX ticket counter, but screening personnel noticed irregularities during an X-ray scan. Upon inspection, law enforcement found clothing items covered in a white residue that tested positive for methamphetamine.
Prosecutors praised the diligence of airport screening officers in catching this unusual smuggling attempt. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada highlighted the dangers of drug trafficking and the importance of law enforcement efforts to combat it. Matharu was intercepted by officers on a jet bridge as he attempted to board his flight to Sydney.
Matharu faces a federal charge of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on December 2. If convicted, he could face a prison term ranging from 10 years to life. The case serves as a reminder of the constant innovation by drug dealers to smuggle narcotics for profit, despite the harm they cause to communities worldwide. Law enforcement remains dedicated to fighting drug trafficking to protect lives and prevent the spread of dangerous substances.
