India Expresses Worries About Extremist Speech Amid Bangladesh Violence

India has expressed its “serious concern” to Bangladesh over the rise in violence against the minority Hindu community in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has shared its worry with Dhaka regarding the surge in extremist rhetoric as well. The Indian government has been in contact with the interim government in Bangladesh on a regular basis concerning communal incidents targeting the Hindu minority.

The Ministry of External Affairs also addressed the labelling of ISKCON, a renowned international religious group, as a “fundamental organisation” by the Bangladesh government. India emphasized that ISKCON is a globally respected organization and called upon Bangladesh to take steps to protect minorities.

In response to the arrest of a popular Hindu priest, Chinmoy Krishna Das, in Bangladesh, the Indian foreign ministry stated that they expect legal processes to deal with the case in a fair and transparent manner. Former prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has also raised concerns about the arrest of the Hindu priest and various attacks on temples and religious sites in the country.

Since Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister, the current military-backed interim administration led by Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus has faced criticism for failing to control violence against minorities, including vandalism, attacks on Hindu businesses and properties, and desecration of temples in Bangladesh. The Indian government is urging Bangladesh to ensure the protection of religious freedom and the security of all communities in the country.
