In 2004, Frickin’ A’s holiday song “Merry Frickin’ Christmas” became a hit in the Boston area, celebrating the Red Sox World Series win and taunting the Yankees. The band, from Ohio, rewrote the song at the suggestion of a Boston radio DJ and it gained popularity during the holiday season. The band members, Jason Short and Jason Phelps, have fond memories of the song but have mostly moved on to other projects. Despite the song’s success, they never received any feedback from the Red Sox or the Yankees. Short and Phelps feel that the song’s controversial lyrics may not pass muster in today’s music industry, but they appreciate the song’s lasting impact on Boston sports fans. Although the band members have mostly moved on from Frickin’ A, they still occasionally play the song for laughs during the holiday season. Perhaps a new Red Sox World Series win would inspire them to reunite, but for now, they remain focused on their current projects.
