Trudeau explains to Trump that Canada’s border is distinct from Mexico’s

Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, praised Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for successfully conveying to President-elect Donald Trump and key nominees the unfairness of lumping Canada in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the U.S. Hillman noted that Trudeau’s dinner with Trump on Friday was a crucial step in preventing threatened tariffs on Canadian products. Trump had previously threatened to impose tariffs on both Canada and Mexico if they did not address the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders.

During the dinner, Trudeau emphasized the stark differences between the Canada-U.S. border and the Mexico-U.S. border, particularly highlighting the negligible trafficking of fentanyl from Canada compared to Mexico. Hillman noted that only 0.6% of total interceptions at the border were from Canada, further emphasizing the significant disparities between the two borders. The ambassador confirmed that Trump seemed to understand the distinctions between the two borders, and Trudeau’s efforts to address his concerns were well received.
