The Worcester community will gather to remember the Worcester 6, six firefighters who died 25 years ago in a fire at the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse. The memorial will take place at the former site of the warehouse, now the Franklin Street Fire Station. The event will include speeches from the Worcester Fire Department and city officials, a procession, a 21-gun salute, music, and more. The firefighters tragically lost their lives while trying to rescue a homeless couple during the massive fire. The legacy of the Worcester 6 lives on, with family members continuing to serve in the Worcester Fire Department. The Leary Firefighters Foundation was created in their memory by actor Denis Leary, a cousin of one of the firefighters. The fire also led to criminal charges against the couple who started the blaze but failed to report it to the authorities. A pop-up exhibit at Union Station, managed by retired firefighters, will also be available for viewing.
