Cambridge city leaders and the Massachusett tribe unveiled newly installed street signs in East Cambridge that are written in both English and Massachusett, following the selection of the project by thousands of Cambridge voters in 2021. The signs, located at each intersection from First to Eighth streets, mark the first phase of the project, which also includes revitalizing the city’s African American Heritage Trail.
The Massachusett translations are displayed on top of the English names in purple, symbolizing the color of the quahog clam shell used for traditional shell beads. The project, spearheaded by Cambridge resident Sage Carbone, represents a collaboration between tribal nations, municipal leaders, and engaged citizens. Vice Mayor Marc McGovern emphasized the significance of acknowledging the indigenous people who lived on the land long before white settlers. This initiative aims to honor the rich history and cultural traditions of the Massachusett tribe in Cambridge.
