The Bahamas has rejected a proposal from the transition team of President-elect Donald Trump to accept deportation flights of migrants from other countries. The Bahamian Prime Minister’s office stated that the country does not have the resources to accommodate such a request. This decision has sparked condemnation from rights advocates and raised questions about the feasibility of carrying out Trump’s deportation plans, which involve legal challenges and cooperation with foreign governments. Trump’s team was reportedly preparing a list of countries, including the Bahamas, to send migrants to if their home countries refuse to take them back. In response, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has sued US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to obtain records related to deportation flights and mass deportation programs. Meanwhile, Trump continues to promote his hardline immigration policies, threatening tariffs on Mexico and Canada until they address issues related to drugs and illegal immigration. Mexico has expressed a desire to reach an agreement with the Trump administration to avoid taking in third-country deportees. The situation remains uncertain as Trump’s deportation plans are set to take effect when he assumes office in January.
