Massachusetts State Police has announced that Det. Lt. Brian Tully, who was under investigation, will be transitioning to a new department, leading the Norfolk County District Attorney’s detective unit. This move comes weeks after a new leader took over the entire agency. Tully had testified in the Karen Read case, while Trooper Michael Proctor, who led the Read investigation, has been suspended for making disparaging remarks about Read that were revealed in the trial.
Additionally, more state troopers connected to the Karen Read case are under internal affairs investigations. The decision to reassign Tully was made by new State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble, but specific details were not provided.
The vacancy for the unit commander position has been posted, overseeing troopers investigating various crimes such as unattended deaths, narcotics, organized crime, sexual assault, and abuse. The position was previously held by Tully, who will continue to assist the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office with past cases during the ongoing investigation.
The Massachusetts State Police’s statement did not provide further information on the rationale behind Tully’s reassignment. The agency is committed to ensuring public safety through this leadership change. The digital evidence analysis lab under this unit processes evidence from various law enforcement agencies. The investigation into Det. Lt. Tully is still ongoing.
