An explosion in the Dutch city of The Hague on Saturday morning has left several apartments destroyed and multiple people injured. Residents of the Mariahoeve neighbourhood reported hearing a loud bang and screams, with one woman mistaking it for an earthquake. The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but police are searching for a car that left the scene.
Four people have been rescued and taken to hospital, with the number of potential trapped individuals still uncertain. One of the injured is reported to be a child. Five apartments were destroyed, and 40 neighbouring apartments have been evacuated.
A specialised urban search and rescue team, including four dogs trained to find victims, has been deployed to the scene. Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed shock at the disaster and extended his thoughts to the victims, emergency services, and all those involved. This team had previously been deployed in Turkey after an earthquake in early 2023.
The investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing as emergency services continue to work at the scene. The Hague residents are coming together to support those affected by the blast, with a sense of unity and solidarity in the face of this tragic event.
