Detective Lieutenant Brian Tully of the Massachusetts State Police has been disciplined in the Karen Read murder investigation. He will lose six days of vacation time as a result. Tully, who previously led the team of investigators working on the case with the Norfolk County district attorney’s office, was removed from his position last month by the new State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble.
The disciplinary action against Tully was due to his failure to meet work standards for his position, as well as his failure to recommend remedial or disciplinary action for employees under his charge. The personnel order detailing the discipline was released to the public on Wednesday.
Other troopers involved in the case, including Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik and lead investigator State Trooper Michael Proctor, are also under investigation for their actions in gathering evidence for the case. Proctor, in particular, faced scrutiny during court proceedings for text messages he wrote about Read.
Due to the mistrial declared in Read’s case in July, prosecutors plan to retry her for allegedly backing into her boyfriend with her SUV after heavy drinking. Defense attorneys have pushed to have the murder charge dropped, citing jurors who indicated they would have acquitted Read. The ongoing scandal has raised questions about the conduct of law enforcement officers involved in the investigation.
