In a historic victory, the University of Massachusetts men’s hockey team shut out No. 11 Boston University for the first time in program history with a 4-0 win at Agganis Arena. Sophomore goaltender Michael Hrabal was a standout player, stopping all 32 shots he faced.
UMass now moves to 8-6-2 on the season, while Boston University drops to 8-6-1. Coach Greg Carvel praised his team’s disciplined performance, with special mention of Hrabal’s outstanding play in goal.
The Minutemen took an early lead in the first period with a goal from Ryan Lautenbach. Despite several disallowed goals for goaltender interference on both sides throughout the game, UMass continued to dominate. They capitalized on a major penalty to Brandon Svoboda, scoring two power play goals back-to-back from players Francesco Dell’Elce, Daniel Jencko, Lucas Ölvestad, and Kenny Connors.
The Minutemen finished the game with a 37-32 edge in shots on goal and strong special teams play, going 3-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Lucas Mercuri and Dell’Elce stood out with multiple assists each. The teams will face each other again on Wednesday at the Mullins Center in a match broadcasted on NESN at 7 p.m. This victory marks a significant achievement for UMass hockey and sets the stage for an exciting rematch between the two teams.
