Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28, of the Terrell Police Department in Texas, was killed in the line of duty after being shot during a traffic stop that occurred on Sunday night. Candanoza requested backup, but moments later, calls came in reporting an officer had been shot. When officers arrived, they confirmed Candanoza had been shot, and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Candanoza had only been with the department since July 2024 and is survived by his wife and child.
On Monday, police announced that a suspect had been apprehended and was being held in the Kaufman County Detention Center. The suspect, a 25-year-old man from Mississippi, was taken into custody at an RV park in Canton, Texas, about 30 miles east of Terrell. The investigation is ongoing, and the department has not released the suspect’s name or announced any charges.
This tragic event has left the community in mourning and has highlighted the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day while serving and protecting the public.
