Massachusetts has experienced a surge in illegal migrants being arrested for sex offenses, with 26 individuals apprehended in the Boston area for crimes against children since August. Many of these migrants had been previously deported but illegally re-entered the country. Despite these crimes, the city of Boston and the state of Massachusetts have taken a strong stance against cooperating with President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations.
The Boston City Council recently reaffirmed a measure restricting police cooperation with ICE to protect immigrant communities, while Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has pledged that state police will not assist in mass deportations. However, a spokesperson for Healey clarified that the state is not a sanctuary state and believes violent criminals should be deported.
City officials in Boston have remained largely silent on the issue, with Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston City Council declining to comment. ICE has continued to make arrests, with recent cases including a Honduran national charged with child assault, a Guatemalan accused of sexual assault, and a Colombian migrant charged with rape against a minor.
The arrests extend back to August, where multiple individuals from Haiti, Brazil, and Guatemala were detained for similar offenses. ICE officials have faced challenges in the arrest process, with some agencies refusing to hold suspects for deportation hearings, leading to difficult and dangerous apprehensions. Despite the ongoing issues, ICE continues to work towards combating child sex crimes in the region.
