Montenegro’s President Jakov Milatović recently spoke to Euronews about his country’s path towards EU accession, expressing optimism that Montenegro will join the EU by 2028. Milatović, who was elected on a pro-EU, anti-corruption platform, has been actively working towards meeting the accession criteria by implementing various reforms. Currently, Montenegro has opened 33 negotiation chapters with three provisionally closed, and the country became a member of NATO in 2017.
However, challenges still remain for Montenegro, including issues related to press freedom, judicial independence, and reducing Russian influence. In his interview with Euronews’ Shona Murray, Milatović acknowledged these challenges but remained hopeful about the country’s progress towards EU membership.
In other news, the agriculture and fisheries council held a meeting today where EU ministers were set to make important decisions regarding fish quotas in the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. This segment is featured on Radio Schuman, a podcast hosted and produced by Maïa de la Baume, with journalist and production assistant Eleonora Vasques, and audio editing by David Brodheim and Georgios Leivaditis. The music for the podcast is composed by Alexandre Jas.
Overall, Montenegro’s President remains determined in his efforts to lead Montenegro towards EU accession, despite the obstacles the country faces. The country’s potential future membership in the EU could have a significant impact on its political landscape and economy.
