Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old man, was named as a “strong person of interest” in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson by New York City police. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on firearm charges after being spotted at a McDonald’s with a ghost gun believed to be used in the shooting. He was found with multiple fraudulent IDs and a three-page manifesto criticizing the healthcare system.
During a press conference, Mayor Eric Adams called Mangione a strong person of interest in the case. The NYPD Commissioner credited a combination of detective work and technology for tracking down Mangione, who has ties to several states and no prior criminal record.
Mangione appeared in court in Pennsylvania for an arraignment on Monday and has been charged with state offenses unrelated to the shooting. The criminal complaint describes the moment when police approached Mangione in the McDonald’s, prompting him to become quiet and shake.
Social media analysis revealed that before the shooting, users left concerned messages on Mangione’s account, including a comment asking if he was ok. Mangione’s family has business and civic ties in Maryland, and he had a keen interest in chronic back pain, based on his reading preferences and social media activity.
Mangione’s appearance in court drew media attention, and he remains a person of interest in the high-profile CEO murder case as investigations continue.
