Southwick Animal Control Officer Liz Bennett has reported an uptick in reports of raccoons exhibiting strange behavior, including walking in circles and appearing lethargic, over the past three weeks. However, these behaviors are not a sign of rabies but rather canine distemper. While the reports had initially decreased in mid-September, they have since increased.
Canine distemper poses no threat to humans, but unvaccinated dogs and puppies are at risk of contracting the fatal disease. Southwick residents are urged to keep a close eye on their pets and ensure they are up to date on their vaccinations to protect them from this virus.
Bennett emphasized the importance of being aware of the symptoms of canine distemper and taking precautions to prevent the spread of the disease. It is crucial for pet owners to be vigilant and seek veterinary care if they notice any concerning symptoms in their animals.
