UNC extends job offer to Bill Belichick

Former Patriots coach Bill Belichick is in talks to become the next head coach at the University of North Carolina, according to The Athletic. While negotiations are ongoing and a deal has not been finalized, Belichick has presented UNC with a detailed plan for running the football program. The potential deal includes historic levels of investment, which could include coaching staff, recruiting staff, and player salaries.

Belichick, who has won six Super Bowls with the Patriots, has never coached at the college level before. If he were to take on the UNC coaching job, he plans to run a professional-style program aimed at preparing players for the NFL. Belichick’s son, Steve Belichick, who is the defensive coordinator at Washington, could be part of the succession plan under the proposed deal.

Despite reports that Belichick had agreed to a deal, there is still pushback from some UNC trustees, and the school’s athletic director and chancellor would need to sign off on the agreement. Belichick, 72, was let go by the Patriots last January after a few mediocre seasons post-Tom Brady. Since then, he has explored media gigs and opportunities while considering his next career move.

Drake Maye, a UNC quarterback and Patriots quarterback, shared his thoughts on Belichick potentially coaching at his alma mater, saying that he believes Belichick could help elevate the college football program. The situation with Belichick and UNC remains fluid, with decisions expected within the next 24 hours.
