Who will receive the reward for finding the killer of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO?

Six days after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan, a suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was taken into custody in Pennsylvania. The FBI and NYPD had launched a joint investigation with rewards totaling $60,000. Mangione was found with fake IDs, a “ghost” gun, a silencer, and clothing matching the shooter’s. The tip that led to his arrest came from a McDonald’s employee who recognized him and reported him to the police.

As of Monday evening, Mangione has not been charged in connection with Thompson’s killing, but with gun charges. To be eligible for the rewards, the tip would need to lead to an arrest and conviction. The process of determining who receives the rewards involves nomination by law enforcement agencies, approval by a committee, and final decision by the Secretary of State. The FBI generally does not disclose information about reward recipients.

The NYPD rewards program is facilitated through Crime Stoppers, where tips can be submitted anonymously. It requires tipsters to provide a unique reference number for updates on the investigation. Rewards are only paid after an arrest and potentially an indictment or conviction.

The McDonald’s employee who reported Mangione may be eligible for a reward if nominated and approved by the relevant agencies. However, the total amount they receive may not reach the full $60,000 advertised. Ultimately, rewards are only distributed after an arrest leading to an indictment or conviction.
