10 additional charges filed by Wisconsin attorney general in fake electors case

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul’s office has filed additional felony charges against two attorneys and an aide who worked for former President Donald Trump. These charges are related to a plan to submit false paperwork claiming that Trump won Wisconsin in the 2020 election. The new charges include forgery and defrauding Republican electors who cast their ballots for Trump, despite Joe Biden’s victory in the state. The individuals involved are scheduled to appear in court in Madison.

One of the attorneys, Jim Troupis, voiced concerns about the case, stating he and his family are being targeted. He also discussed the financial strain of defending the case. The charges against the individuals carry a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine each.

The scheme involving fake electors took place following Biden’s win in Wisconsin by about 21,000 votes in the 2020 election. The fake electors submitted paperwork falsely claiming that Trump won the state’s electoral votes. There are pending charges related to similar fake electors schemes in other states, and federal prosecutors have indicated that the plot originated in Wisconsin.

Troupis, who represented the Trump campaign in legal challenges following the 2020 election, has filed motions to dismiss the charges against him, arguing that no crime was committed. Notably, the 10 electors involved in the scheme have not faced criminal charges, but last year settled a lawsuit acknowledging their role in attempting to overturn the election. The hearing related to these charges comes as Trump is set to return to office next month.
