Methuen movie theater temporarily shuts down for cleaning after rodent sighting

Last week, Methuen health officials closed down an AMC theater temporarily after a moviegoer reported seeing a rat scuttle across her feet during a showing of “Wicked.” Although no actual rodents were found during the inspection, evidence suggested they had been present in the theater. Caeli Tegan Zampach, the director of Methuen Health, Human Services, and Inspections, explained that in a dark theater with plenty of hiding spots and food crumbs, rodents can easily thrive, making it an ideal environment for them.

AMC responded by stating their commitment to providing a clean and comfortable movie-going experience for their guests. The theater was being deep-cleaned and treated for pests, with plans to reopen once fully resolved. The woman who made the complaint shared her experience on social media, stating that a rat ran through her popcorn and over her feet during the final song of “Wicked,” causing her to leave in a panic.

The health department’s inspection revealed signs of rodents in the theater, indicating where they likely entered. Interestingly, other businesses in the same plaza did not report any rodent problems, all having pest control measures in place. The theater, located on Pleasant Valley Street, remained closed for further cleaning and inspections.

Overall, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and pest control in public spaces to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
