President-elect Donald Trump’s Defense secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth, appears to be changing his stance on women serving in combat roles. Previously, he had opposed women in combat, claiming their inclusion made fighting more complicated and less effective. However, as he meets with key GOP senators for his confirmation, he seems to have reversed his position, now praising the contributions of women in the military. Hegseth’s shift comes amidst allegations of wrongdoing and meeting with potential holdout senators like Joni Ernst, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski. Despite accusations and past statements, Hegseth is pushing for support from senators ahead of his confirmation hearing. The Pentagon opened all combat roles to women in 2016, allowing women to serve in various combat arms fields. However, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a combat veteran, believes Hegseth’s previous statements disqualify him for the Defense secretary position. Despite the controversy surrounding his nomination, Hegseth is working to garner support from senators to secure his position in Trump’s Cabinet.
