A group of University of Massachusetts Amherst students staged a protest on campus in May 2024, calling for justice in Palestine. The protest culminated in the arrest of 134 protesters, two of whom faced felony charges. The demonstration was part of a larger movement of campus encampments across the country last spring. While the outcome of such protests is often debated, they shed light on the tension between activism and institutional authority.
The students demanded divestment from Israel, citing the university’s financial ties to military contractors involved in the conflict. Despite protests, the university did not agree to divest, opting instead to create a task force to review demonstration policies. The task force made recommendations such as requiring protesters to show identification during demonstrations and redefining campus structures that could restrict future protests.
An independent review of the events recommended improved communication and coordination to prevent future conflicts and rebuild trust between students and administration. The university has acknowledged the pain caused by the events and stated its commitment to learning from the experience.
