Costco investors reject diversity measures as Target halts DEI initiative


Discount store chain Target announced on Friday that it would be scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, joining other prominent American brands in this decision. The Minneapolis-based retailer will be ending its “Belonging at the Bullseye” program, which aimed to support Black employees, shoppers, and businesses in the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing in 2020.

Target, which operates nearly 2,000 stores and employs over 400,000 people, stated that it had planned to end the racial program this year and would also conclude its DEI goals set in three-year cycles. The move comes as conservative activists and the White House have criticized such initiatives.

While some companies, like Walmart and McDonald’s, have also reduced their DEI commitments, others, such as Costco, have held firm. Costco shareholders recently rejected a proposal to evaluate its diversity practices. Despite the changing landscape, Target has been a long-time advocate for the rights of Black and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The company’s decision to scale back its diversity initiatives comes as it aims to navigate potential backlash from conservative groups and customers. Target has faced criticism in the past for its inclusive policies, such as supporting transgender individuals using the restroom of their choice.
