After a tumultuous winter at Pittsfield High School, with the arrest of dean of students Lavante Wiggins on federal charges of cocaine trafficking, other staff members have been put on leave due to misconduct claims. Despite the negative spotlight on the school, students attended a recent school committee meeting to share their perspective.
One student, Ben Glockner, emphasized the strength and unity of the PHS community, citing a recent pep rally that inspired him and showcased the school’s ability to come together. However, another student, Jess Perry, highlighted the racial dimension of the situation, expressing concerns about racial comments and behavior that have surfaced since Wiggins’ arrest.
Perry, who is Black, spoke out against harmful stereotypes and racism, urging for a safe and inclusive environment at PHS. The school committee has hired a law firm to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations, including inappropriate relationships between district employees and students. The probe is set to be completed by the end of March.
Despite the challenges faced by PHS, students like Perry remain hopeful for positive change and a renewed focus on creating a welcoming and diverse school community. The issues raised by students deserve to be addressed to ensure that PHS remains a place where everyone feels respected and able to thrive. Audio from the school committee meeting was provided by Pittsfield Community Television.
