Man sentenced for Attleboro rape following 1994 conviction

Eduardo Mendez, a 51-year-old man from Guatemala, was sentenced to serve 15 to 20 years in state prison for aggravated rape in a cold case that dates back over three decades. The conviction came after a jury trial at the Fall River Superior Court in Massachusetts. Mendez was found guilty of raping a 36-year-old woman in 1994 in Attleboro, after she was approached by a group of men and dragged into a nearby apartment hallway. A passerby heard the victim’s screams and rescued her, leading her to the police station. The evidence collection kit from the incident went untested for decades until it was discovered in 2018, where a DNA match to Mendez was confirmed. The victim’s perseverance over the last thirty years was commended by District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III. This case highlights the importance of testing rape kits to ensure justice for victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
