82-year-old Hingham High School track coach Andrew L. Wayne pleaded not guilty to charges of indecent assault and battery and assault and battery in January after a student accused him of slapping and squeezing her butt before pushing her during practice. Wayne was released on personal recognizance with restrictions, including staying away from the student and the high school.
The incident occurred during a drill where the girl and her teammates were running in place with their hands against a wall. The girl reported that Wayne grabbed her butt, pushed her, and later asked her if she was being bullied by her teammates. The girl felt uncomfortable and intimidated by Wayne’s behavior and told her parents about the incident.
Wayne denied the accusations when shown surveillance footage, stating he only adjusted her foot with his foot during the drill. He has been placed on leave by the high school and is scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on March 5. His defense attorney declined to comment on the case.
