Netflix and Prince Estate Cancel Highly Anticipated Documentary
In a surprising turn of events, Netflix and the Prince estate have announced the cancellation of a highly anticipated documentary about the late singer. The decision was made after the two parties struck a deal that allows the estate to produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive.
Directed by Ezra Edelman, the film was expected to shed light on the alleged abuse in Prince’s life. It included interviews with ex-girlfriend-muses who claimed the pop star was physically and emotionally abusive. Edelman spent almost five years perfecting the documentary, which was set to explore Prince’s artistry and on-stage presence as well.
Netflix was granted access to Prince’s personal archive, the “vault,” which houses unreleased songs, concert recordings, photographs, and more. However, new executors of the estate raised concerns about the film’s content, leading to a legal battle with Netflix to cancel the project.
The cancellation was announced on Instagram, where both parties expressed mutual agreement to scrap the nine-hour-long film. The Prince estate also released a video titled “The Vault Has Been Freed,” hinting at upcoming projects with exclusive content.
Despite the disappointment of fans, the cancellation has paved the way for a new documentary with exclusive insights into Prince’s life and career. The decision marks a significant shift in the relationship between the streaming platform and the late singer’s estate.
