Parents file lawsuit against high school history teacher for disciplinary action related to son’s use of AI for cheating

The parents of a Massachusetts high school senior have filed a lawsuit against his teacher, school faculty, and the local school committee after he was punished for using artificial intelligence tools to research and create an outline for a history class essay. The student received detention, a poor grade, and was barred from joining the National Honor Society. The lawsuit challenges the disciplinary decisions made over the use of AI for academic work and could set a legal precedent.

The student’s lawyer emphasized that AI is not plagiarism but rather the output of a machine, comparing it to using a search engine to find sources and develop ideas. The school district, Hingham Public Schools, and the defendants have filed a motion to dismiss the complaint.

The student had aimed for Stanford University but received a poor grade after his AP U.S. History teacher discovered his use of AI for a project on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The student’s parents, both educators, reached out to the school regarding his punishment and an investigation found that other students had also used AI and faced disciplinary action.

As the college admissions process is ongoing, the student is waiting to submit applications in the hope that the lawsuit will lead to changes in his grade, reinstatement into the honor society, and a clarification of the incident not being labeled as cheating on his applications. College admissions experts believe that most universities allow the use of AI as long as proper citations and original work are included, giving hope to the student in his application process.
