Former Massachusetts legislator convicted of defrauding pandemic unemployment funds – The Killeen Daily Herald

Former Massachusetts state representative David Nangle has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for his role in a scheme to defraud pandemic unemployment assistance funds. Nangle pled guilty to charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements to a bank.

The scheme involved Nangle submitting false claims for unemployment benefits using the personal information of employees from his private family business. He received over $166,000 in fraudulent benefits that he used for personal expenses including gas, meals, and golf outings.

In addition to the prison sentence, Nangle was ordered to pay restitution of $64,524 to the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance. Prosecutors argued that Nangle’s actions undermined the integrity of the unemployment benefits system and that he took advantage of a program meant to help those in need during the pandemic.

Nangle’s attorney argued for a lighter sentence, citing his client’s remorse and good works as a public servant. Nangle served as a state representative for over two decades and was known for his advocacy on issues such as combating drug addiction and supporting veterans.

The judge, however, emphasized the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions, stating that Nangle’s conduct was a betrayal of the public trust. Nangle’s sentencing serves as a reminder that those who abuse their positions for personal gain will face consequences.

The case highlights the need for oversight and accountability in the distribution of pandemic relief funds to ensure that they reach those who truly need assistance. The sentencing of Nangle sends a message that fraudulent behavior will not be tolerated, especially when it comes at the expense of those who are struggling during difficult times.
