Massachusetts House Democrats have hired a high-profile Boston law firm in preparation for a potential legal battle with State Auditor Diana DiZoglio. The firm, CEK Boston, is led by former First Assistant Attorney General Thomas Kiley and has been hired as tensions rise over DiZoglio’s push to audit her former colleagues in the state legislature.
Legislative leaders have been pushing back against DiZoglio’s efforts, arguing that an audit would violate the state constitution. Despite overwhelming voter approval for the audit last fall, House Speaker Ronald J. Mariano has criticized the Auditor’s claims and decision-making process.
Nonprofit organization BINJ reported that House Democrats began seeking representation before the audit was approved by voters. Organizations like the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance have been supporting DiZoglio in her efforts, calling for Attorney General Andrea J. Campbell to enforce the will of the voters.
Campbell, who has expressed support for the audit, has stated that her office must follow a specific process to determine which state agencies it represents. Pressure is mounting for action to be taken to resolve the ongoing dispute between legislators and the state Auditor.
