Five people have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man who was reported missing in February in upstate New York. Nordquist’s body was found in a field, showing signs of ongoing physical abuse that began in December. Those arrested include Precious Arzuaga, Patrick Goodwin, Kyle Sage, Jennifer Quijano, and Emily Motyka, all charged with second-degree murder and denied bail.
Nordquist had traveled to New York from Minnesota to meet people he had met online, but never returned home as planned. His family reported him missing in February when they could not reach him. Police discovered evidence of prolonged physical and psychological abuse, leading to the arrest of the suspects at a motel where Nordquist had last been staying.
The investigation is ongoing, with detectives considering the possibility of a hate crime due to Nordquist’s transgender identity. An autopsy will be conducted on Nordquist’s remains to determine the exact cause of death. If convicted, the suspects could face life in prison.
The case has shocked authorities and the community, with Captain Kelly Swift calling it “one of the most horrific crimes” investigated in her 20-year career. The details of Nordquist’s relationship with the suspects and the motive behind the abuse remain unanswered. Nordquist’s family believes the violence he endured may have been driven by hate.
