Nurses are speaking up about the increasing disrespect and mistreatment they face from patients and their families in the healthcare system. In response to a nurse’s column, two fellow nurses shared their perspectives on the challenges they face daily. They highlighted the emotional toll of dealing with patient complaints and the lack of respect and support they receive. One nurse emphasized that nurses should not have to endure mistreatment while simply doing their jobs, especially in a system that is struggling.
Another nurse pointed out that the growing incivility towards healthcare workers can be attributed to the normalization of rudeness and bullying by those in power. They expressed concern that nurses are facing real danger, as incidents of physical violence towards healthcare workers are on the rise.
Both nurses called for real change in the healthcare system to ensure the safety and well-being of nurses and prevent further loss of lives. The public needs to understand that healthcare workers are not punching bags, and more support and accountability are needed to address the issue.
