New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux may be on the move as the team has given him permission to seek a trade, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Godchaux signed a two-year contract extension last offseason but has yet to see it take effect.
Trading Godchaux before June 1 would clear up $1.67 million in cap space for the Patriots, with the team taking on $6.67 million in dead money. Releasing him before June 1 would cost the team $2.33 million in cap space. A post-June 1 trade would result in $5 million in cap space saved, while a post-June 1 release would save $1 million.
The Patriots have a crowded defensive tackle depth chart, with Godchaux potentially not fitting into the new attacking defensive scheme introduced by head coach Mike Vrabel and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. The team recently signed Marcus Harris and has other options at the position. It remains to be seen if Godchaux will be moved before the upcoming season.
