In the latest Emerson poll, Boston Mayor Wu takes an early lead over Josh Kraft.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu currently leads billionaire philanthropist Josh Kraft in the first poll of the city’s young mayoral campaign. According to a new Emerson College poll, 43% of respondents support Wu, while Kraft takes 29% support. However, nearly a quarter of respondents (24%) remain undecided, indicating that the race is still up for grabs with eight months to go before Election Day.

The poll, which sampled the opinions of 617 registered voters from February 24 to Wednesday, has a margin of error of 3.9%. Despite this, a majority of respondents (57%) believe the city is heading in the right direction, giving Wu a strong start in the pre-election polls of the year. She commands strong support among Asian (58%) and Hispanic voters (54%).

On the other hand, Kraft splits the white vote with Wu at 39% to 37%, respectively. A plurality of respondents (41%) approve of Wu’s job performance, while 38% disapprove. When it comes to Kraft, voters are split with 27% having a favorable view and 24% having an unfavorable view, with over a third (36%) undecided.

Wu is set to testify before the House Oversight Committee next week on Boston’s immigration policies and has been meeting with key constituencies across the city to garner support. Despite her strong start in the polls, the race for Boston mayor remains competitive as both candidates work to win over voters in the coming months.
