Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn introduced a resolution in support of a Boston Public Library employee with cancer at a council meeting. Eve Griffin, a library curator with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, had her extended sick leave request denied by the library and the city’s Office of Labor Relations. The library staff union, PSA, has been advocating for Griffin to receive the sick leave donated by her coworkers.
After facing pushback from the library’s Board of Trustees, the PSA went public with their effort, leading to a City Council resolution in support of Griffin. Councilors stated that denying the sick leave undermined the compassionate intent of the fund and placed undue burden on an employee battling a life-threatening illness.
The PSA made progress during a hearing discussing the sick leave contract, and Councilor Flynn advocated for Griffin at a City Council meeting. The resolution passed, supporting Griffin and highlighting the values of empathy and solidarity. The outcome of the hearing is pending, but the PSA remains optimistic about a favorable verdict. The BPL declined to comment on the personnel matter, citing privacy concerns.
