Boston Celtics release rookie player on two-way contract before important deadline

The Boston Celtics announced on Sunday that they have released rookie two-way forward Anton Watson following their win over the Denver Nuggets. Watson, who was selected as the No. 54 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, was signed to a two-way contract in August but did not see any action with the Celtics during the regular season. Instead, he spent most of his time playing for the Maine Celtics in the G-League, where he averaged 12.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 21 appearances.

Despite his solid production in the G-League, Watson’s shooting efficiency was a concern, as he shot just 42.8 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from beyond the arc. With Watson no longer on the roster, the Celtics have until March 4th to fill the open two-way contract spot. According to a league source, Boston is considering their options ahead of the deadline.

Given Jrue Holiday’s finger injury and uncertain recovery timetable, the team may be looking to add some experienced backcourt depth. The Celtics currently have Drew Peterson and JD Davison occupying their other two-way slots. Several other NBA teams have also been making moves involving two-way players in anticipation of the upcoming deadline.
