Eastbound I-10 reopens following fatal crash that claimed the lives of four people

Four people were killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 10 near Tonopah, west of Phoenix. The crash involved multiple vehicles and tractor-trailers, resulting in the closure of the eastbound lanes for over 16 hours. Initially, the Department of Public Safety reported six fatalities, but later confirmed four deaths, with two individuals in critical condition and six others hospitalized. Five of those injured had already been released.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. on Saturday, and authorities suspect adverse weather conditions, specifically blowing dust, may have played a role in reducing visibility. While there is no evidence of speed or impairment being factors in the collision, the investigation is ongoing.

The Arizona Department of Transportation confirmed that there is construction at the location of the crash. The vehicles involved included commercial motor vehicles, passenger vehicles, a van, and a recreational vehicle towing a trailer. Authorities are still working to notify the next of kin of the deceased individuals.

Despite the remote location of the crash, response time from troopers was not hindered. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities working late into the night to determine what happened. Drivers heading east toward Phoenix were diverted off the freeway at Salome Road, leading to significant traffic congestion throughout Saturday.
