The 2025 Patriots are looking to fill several holes on their roster, but running back isn’t necessarily one of them with Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson set to return. However, UNC running back Omarion Hampton has confirmed meetings with New England and expressed interest in teaming up with former collegiate teammate, quarterback Drake Maye. Hampton described Maye as a mentor during their time at UNC and praised his skills in the NFL.
Having rushed for 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns during Maye’s final season at UNC in 2023, Hampton continued to impress in 2024 with 1,660 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns along with receiving yards. Maye, who has shown support for Hampton on social media, could benefit from Hampton’s versatility and familiarity if they were to reunite in New England.
Although Hampton is highly rated as the No. 2 running back in the draft class, behind Ashton Jeanty, he could be a second-round pick. The Patriots, with a pick in the second round, could consider Hampton, but their primary need currently revolves around the offensive line. Despite the potential appeal of reuniting Maye and Hampton, the Patriots may have to prioritize other positions in the draft. It remains to be seen if Hampton will join forces with Maye once again in the NFL.
