Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria has won a $1.1 million settlement in a defamation lawsuit against the Everett Leader Herald, its owner, publisher, and editor. The lawsuit alleged that the newspaper published false stories that damaged the Mayor’s reputation. As part of the settlement, the 139-year-old newspaper will be forced to shut down and the defendants must pay the $1.1 million within seven days. In exchange for the payment and newspaper closure, Mayor DeMaria has agreed to forgo a trial scheduled for January 21. A news conference will be held on December 16 to discuss the settlement. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
