Twenty-three-year-old Sandra Birchmore was found dead in her apartment, hanging from the door handle of her bedroom closet. The initial ruling was suicide, but a federal indictment alleges that former police officer Matthew Farwell planned and executed her murder. Farwell, who had a sexual relationship with Birchmore since she was 15, was indicted on charges of grooming, controlling, and eventually killing her.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Farwell had previously had sex with Birchmore when she was a minor, and used violent sex acts as punishment for perceived misbehavior. He was also accused of grooming and controlling her, with the goal of silencing her permanently when he could no longer control her. Farwell resigned from the police department and was decertified but did not face criminal charges for years.
The case has brought attention to the issue of abuse and misconduct in police Explorer programs, with nearly 200 allegations of grooming, abuse, or inappropriate behavior by law enforcement personnel. Experts warn of the potential harm and urge parents to be cautious when enrolling their children in such programs. The investigation into Birchmore’s case is still ongoing, with additional officers being implicated in her abuse. Victims of sexual assault or those in crisis are encouraged to seek help from organizations like RAINN and the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
